Fitzgerald's Park is situated on the picturesque bank of the river Lee and spans eighteen acres. The park has swings and slides for children to play on and is a popular Bank Holiday and sunny Sunday location for young families. It is not only the young, however who enjoy the park! The landscaped gardens, rich with trees and shrubs, as well as sculotures by Cork's own Seamus Murphy, make it the perfect place for an evening stroll. The park is very close to the Mardyke. The Mardyke doesn't exist as it once did because once it was fabled in song for it's Elm Trees...
The Banks Of My Own Lovely Lee
Oh how oft do my thoughts in their fancy take flight
To the home of my childhood away
To the days when each patriot’s vision seemed bright
Ere I dreamed that those joys would decay
My heart was as light as the fair wind that blows
Down the Mardyke through each elm tree
Where I sported and played ‘neath each green leafy shade
On the banks of my own lovely Lee
Where I sported and played ‘neath each green leafy shade
On the banks of my own lovely Lee
Also on site is the Cork Public Museum where you can persue Charles Stewart Parnell's love letters to Kitty O'Shea among other items of History.
